i recently found this site and feel that it's worth a look. the recipes are relatively simple and i've been pleased with the couple that i've tried. the language is raw and repetitive (if this is an example of swearing like a sailor i fear for the navy) but easily filtered out.

Sweet. I like it.

And sailors don't hold back like these lame-ass posers, unless they're in fucking church or some such shit.

You're only meant to swear to give emphasis and impact. So swearing in fucking church would be like the best use of it, EVER!
Thank you. Now I have a life goal. mwahahahahaha

vendic, it would appear that sailors do not reserve swearing for special occasions but do it freely and, dare I say it, incessantly.

oh geonuc, after years of trying to find out just what comprises swearing like a sailor, another example!

From experience I can say without hesitation that sailors swear far less than back of house in a restaurant.
Real conversations go something like this:
Just get your fucking finger out your fucking arse and cut the fucking shit the fucking way it's meant to be fucking cut and do your fucking job without being a fucking whinny little cunt. For fucks sake!

Or this:

The customer wants a fucking rare fucking steak. What the fuck do you call this pile of shit! it's fucking cardboard not a fucking steak. Cook a fucking rare steak of fuck off!

Maybe even this:

It's five fucking minutes before closing and they fucking come in wanting a fucking meal. We're in the process of shutting down the fucking kitchen and cleaning the fuck up. We have fucking lives other than being here for you beckon fucking call. Fucking idiots. Assholes everywhere.
Server to the customers: Hi, welcome to the restaurant. Have you dined here before? No no, there's no problem about coming late as the kitchen takes orders till 9pm and it's only 8:55. Would you care for some wine from our selection?

Sailors, at least cruisers don't swear much at all as their wives or girlfriends are around. I find it extremely sexist and offensive so I try not to participate in this discriminatory fucking practice. :)

yes, I see that it would be quite a strain for you to get those words out of your active vocabulary. please, I implore you, take small steps should you ever decide to try. but why change? everyone likes you just the way you are.

I am afraid that your depiction of kitchen staff talk is a disappointment. just insert a form of what my mother referred to as 'that 4-letter word' approximately every 2-3 words with a sprinkling of ? please, to hear something like that all I have to do is telephone my sister. geonuc's examples are far more entertaining.

now please understand that when I refer to sailors I do not mean hobbyists with boats who take them out on occasion but rather those in the navy and those who sail as a profession.

finally, while I believe that it is wonderful to have principles and to live by them I feel that the last 3 words in your statement of principle should be rearranged.
to wit: ...f*** discriminatory practice.

(yes, I know the word and how to use it. you'll be hard-pressed to find anyone who's gotten through grad school who doesn't.)

These are full time live aboard sailors (cruisers) who have either traveled the world or are planning to. They spend more time on their boats than most professional sailors do because their home is their boat and they don't get leave except at times to restock. For example, in the last four months I have spent about 2 days off the boat and that was recently to get the car, I have no idea when I will again. The military might be similar but they also get to go home, these people don't have one other than the boat. I just wanted to clarify that as they certainly wouldn't be classified as hobbyists and calling them such might invoke sailor renowned words. lol

The part time sailors I have spent time with swear about as much as any person does. Cruisers swear less. That's been my experience anyway.

living on a boat does not qualify one as a sailor. furthermore, I am considering the idea that one must be in the navy or some similar regimented organization to truly qualify. you do understand that this is my own private classification. I am not interested in calling anyone anything. I will, however, point out that your idea of sampling leaves quite a bit to be desired.

Technically anyone that navigates a marine vessel is a sailor.
The term cruiser/live aboard is for those who sail their boat and live on it as well.
The term used for those who live on their boats or never take them out is dock queen.

Its a very strange community.
Some will argue that catamarans aren't sail boats, others that if you don't sail your boat in gale force winds or higher regularly you are a fair weather sailor. Others don't consider you a sailor unless you've got literally tens of thousands of miles and one or two circumnavigations don't count as they are easy. Another segment doesn't consider you a sailor unless you actually, you know, sail a wind powered vessel.

I only gave my experience in what I have seen over the last 20 or so years of boating here and in Australia. Sure it's anecdotal, but it's been pretty consistent. :)
