Unhealth foods (aka "Don't eat the pond scum")

Can't have a bar without a Grill... So here's where we discuss great (and no so great) food. The good, the bad and the "even the dog won't eat it" mistakes of our culinary attempts...

Unhealth foods (aka "Don't eat the pond scum")

It's been known for a while that alfalfa sprouts should not be on anyone's menu. Now blue-green algae joins that category, with such downstream side effects as
- Lou Gherig's disease
- Parkinsonism
- Dementia (including Alzheimer's disease)

Apparently even very low doses of BMAA can cause these conditions with enough exposure time...

I've been skeptical of "superfood" claims for a while, but hot damn, I never expected anything like this.

Who the heck eats blue-green algae, other than some fish and insect larve?

By the way, what a lot of people call pond scum is really a plant called Duckweed.

All sorts of people who think it might cure what ails them. ;)

I am of the opinion that breathing is hazardous to your health (at least over time).

Why is it that every time I read the title of this thread I I get the song "Don't Step on the Grass Sam" going in my head?

Here's another one: agave nectar as a low glycemic sweetener. Hey, low glycemic index means less fattening right?

Nope. It's got a low glycemic index because it contains more fructose than high-fructose corn syrup. Whee!

Frankly, all low glycemic really means is that it will spike your blood sugar slower. High calorie, low glycemic index, foods will still make you fat. Sorry to burst your bubble. :P

In the case of agave nectar it's actually worse than that, because fructose is metabolized in the liver. Use of high-fructose corn syrup in lots of food items is theorized to be responsible for the widespread nonalcoholic fatty liver disease that doctors in the US are currently seeing.

Technically speaking it's probably the OVER CONSUMPTION of high fructose corn syrup that is causing the problem. which is why most of the reliable experts on nutrition use the word "moderation" a lot. :P

Well yes, and moderation is difficult when it turns up in lots and lots of products... Or when you're sweetening your coffee with agave nectar. :P
