10 Reasons You Should Get Laid Off If You're Over 40

Had a crappy day? Think your only friend is the dog? Got fired? Someone piss in your Wheaties? Just need to blow off some steam and rant? Here's the place to do it. No judgement, maybe some sympathy, possibly some advice... but definitely a safe place to go off on the world.

10 Reasons You Should Get Laid Off If You're Over 40

This doesn't deserve a space anywhere but in BMR.

I encourage real discussion however. It's just that if you want to spout off, you should be able to. This guy is so full of shit, and has his head so far up his ass, I'm surprised he hasn't suffocated from the stench of his own crap.

Businesses and markets evolve too quickly to keep you around – There’s no reason to keep people employed making film cameras, desktop PCs, floppy disks, etc. Can you imagine what would happen if workers with skills relevant in the 1980s had to be kept on the job? People in obsolete businesses need to be retrained or removed.

And this dude worked for IBM? I guess he worked with punch cards there. In IT if you don't bother to learn, yer dead, doesn't matter if you're 20, 40 or 100. So spare me the BS.

New hires, especially younger people, will have a better attitude than you – This might be painful to hear, but younger people are often more compliant and eager to please than older workers.

Ah yes, compliant and eager to please and when upper management blames THEM for the fuckups their hare-brained schemes caused, the younger, compliant and eager to please folks will kneel and take one for the team. One thing is to be young or even unexperienced, another thing is to be stupid.

Besides, wasn't the big complaint about "Millennials" that they had low tolerance for corporate indoctrination?, so which is it?

You don’t have the right relationship with technology – Younger workers are “digital natives” – they have a completely intimate relationship with technology, a relationship that managers often perceive (wrongly, in many cases) as being useful to business. You are a “digital immigrant.”

roll:

This dude must have worked as an HR critter.

[Hides under the nearest rock in case swift and wife read this]

[gets out from under the rock and adds]

Ok Ok, this dude must have worked as Marketing drone :P

[gets back under the rock]

He's a yutz who is trying to make a living after being laid off. And he is trying to put lipstick on a pig. After all, it is true that older workers cost more. And we know what corporate loyality is like these days. But he did throw the dog a bone right at the end of the article by encouraging older workers to become consultants, contractors, and such. :cheer:

Older workers cost more?
I call bullshit.
You pay more for health care here in the USA, elsewhere things like that are non issues.

What you get in return however is experience and that means not making major fuckups that cost a ton of money.
Like my old boss, hires a guy for $10,000 p.a. less than one that's experienced.
It's now cost him at least ten times that in reputation, screwups, training, damages etc.

Bit like people claiming they use the cheapest they can buy or don't ever change the oil.
Bragging about saving almost $200 in the last 4 years then ignoring that the engine needed to be rebuilt a year ago costing $4000.

But those are costs that the employer doesn't have to pay for. Older worker's use more healthcare. Healthcare premiums go up. Employers usually pay 50% to 80% of that cost. So, if you kick the high utilizers to the curb they cost someone else $4000 to have their motors rebuilt. :P

As for the expertise you lose that's easy. Lay off the guy and hire him back as a contractor for 30% less than you used to pay him with benefits. Write him a shiny contract that pays him 20% more gross salary than he used to make. you keep the expertise and you cut labor costs. He's usually too naïve to realize that you just screwed him out of 30% of his previous employment arrangement with you. Because the average employee has no idea how much their employers are or are not paying for benefits provided to them as part of the total compensation package.

That might work the first year, if the employee's expertise is specialized (and usually is otherwise why keep him/her around), the second year is payback time :P

Your skills are not as valuable as they used to be
...

You don’t have the right relationship with technology

In addition to his other falsehoods and delusions.... he is demonstrating his belief that I see a lot now a days among talking heads: that the beginning and end of all current commerce, business, and development is computers, apps, websites, smart-phones, etc.

It just so happens that a lot of us in industry still actually make things instead of just moving electrons around (no insult to you electron movers). And yes, those processes use computers, software, and electrons. But the technology of making steel, ceramics, cars, pharmaceuticals, stuff... hasn't changed so much or that rapidly that those of us who have been doing it for the last couple of decades haven't kept up, nor are lacking valuable knowledge about how to do such things.

Does California accept gay marriage?
More to the point, do they accept it federally for immigration purposes?
