I just have to put this out there...

With collar buttoned
- I feel like I can't breath properly
- My head feels like it's stuffed with feathers
- I keep unconsciously tugging at my neck trying to loosen the damn thing
- I'm easily distracted and have little job enthusiasm

With collar unbuttoned
- I can breath normally
- I pay attention to the computer screen, not my collar
- Work is less vexing, colors are brighter, etc.

... And the hell of it is
- All my shirts fit me perfectly except for the collar
- I'm a pencil-necked geek
- Most guys I see at work have thicker necks and tighter collars than me

I wonder, in complete seriousness, what sort of health impact over-tight collars have on middle class workers. AFAIK not much pressure on the carotid arteries is required to cause serious problems.

What the article doesn't mention is... shirts that fit perfectly except for the collar. On a relatively guy who already has a narrow neck. It's not just that people don't want to buy new clothes, it's that the clothes are cut to unrealistic dimensions to begin with.

Guess this is the men's stylistic equivalent of high heels?

Do you wear a tie at work? That's the only reason I can think to wear a button-collared shirt. That seems rather retro now a days; most places seem to have gone to business casual (polo shirts).

I too do not like a tight collar, or pretty much anything tight around my neck. I don't even like to wear scarves. If you buy "sized" shirts - like "34/15", the second number is the neck size, you can get something with a bigger neck size so it isn't so tight.

They also make collar extenders. I use one when I wear a dress shirt.

@FZ, I take it you're referring to the necktie's purported origin as a wearable napkin/handkerchief? I always thought that was kind of dubious, but it would be hilarious if it were true.

The origins of the tie, at least in the West, came from Croatia.
It was first noticed about 1630 because it was worn by the Croatian soldiers when supporting the French King of the day.
It became popular in Europe after that.
The claims are that it was part of their uniform, though that is partially true.
The Croatians were given a cravata ((cravat in English) by their wives or family and it was hand made by the soldiers loved ones.
If they fell in battle, the cravata would be brought back so that the remaining family knew he had died.

It's just typical of historians to do half their homework and call it a uniform simply because they saw all of the men wearing one.
It was also started by the peasants (they are the grunts in war) because they were recruited (forced) to fight wars for the rich and powerful but instead became a symbol of the rich and powerful.

Probably as a way for them to get the favour of the peasants by showing how they too might die for the cause.
Typically, like everything else, it is now used to separate the worthy from the unworthy.

So there you go. Short of older Croatians that have a long verbal history, the real story of the cravata is something almost like a best kept secret.
Not that it's a secret, just that no one really gives a shit enough to bother finding out the real history of something that is now representing prestige and power.

Next time someone says something about the tie, or your tie that you don't like, inform them of the origin of the tie.
It's meant to be something personal, unique and is worn by the wearer the sake of his family, not for the wearer himself and certainly not as a fucking statement of any description whatsoever.

So every time I see people wearing ties, I just think of them like monkeys that just opened a box of toilet paper and put torn sheets on their heads.
Both think they look awesome and both have no idea just how ridiculous their ignorance is.

I rarely wear a tie, though, but I doubt there's much to the idea that wearing one properly has health effects.
