Pope excommunicates Mafiosi

a) I'm surprised they hadn't done that already
b) It's not like the mafiosi will actually care
... But now that I think about it: does the Vatican have any known connections with the Mafia? Or historical inklings thereof?
Because if so, it strikes me that this might be more of the Pope showing that he really does want to clean house.
