I forgot to mention here but I finally gave in and bought one! And it's great! Cooks twice as fast as my house's oven, with better crisping even at low temperatures.
Better living through physics! I've got plans for it for tonight, will post photos.

Does the outside get really hot? It looks sort of bright too. But, tres cool.

It is annoyingly bright TBH, the light is probably a migraine risk for me. So far I've supervised it from an adjacent room while it's running, so that I can minimize the light exposure but still be on hand if it starts smoking or something.
So, I am wondering if the halogen oven has survived and is still considered the uber baking device?
